Furthermore, fieldwork in the Ninose area involves walking on uneven terrain and mountain paths. If you have specific accessibility, physical, or dietary requirements, please detail them in the "Practical Notes" section of your application form so we can discuss potential accommodations.

Q3. Who can apply for this residency? / このレジデンスには、どのような人が応募できますか？

[EN] This program is open to international creators, artists, designers, architects, researchers, curators, and writers from all over the world, regardless of nationality, age, or place of residence.

Q4. What kinds of research topics and project proposals are you looking for? / どのようなリサーチテーマやプロジェクト提案を求めていますか？

[EN] We welcome proposals that explore traditional crafts through a broad lens—connecting craft to materials, nature, architecture, local history, and living traditions. Research topics do not need to be limited to lacquer or architecture; proposals addressing Kyoto’s broader craft context, local culture, or material origins are highly encouraged. Rather than static product designs, we seek open-minded proposals that embrace process, research, and unexpected encounters, with a strong desire to build ongoing, meaningful relationships with the local community, artisans, and regions even after the residency.

Q5. Do I need an experience in traditional crafts to apply? / 応募にあたり、伝統工芸に関する経験は必要ですか？

[EN] No prior experience in traditional crafts or past residency experience is required. We welcome emerging creators and practitioners from non-craft fields as long as you have a strong interest in Kyoto's craft context, a self-driven research attitude, and a desire to build ongoing connections with the region.

Q6. How detailed does my project proposal need to be? / プロジェクト提案は、どの程度具体的である必要がありますか？

[EN] While we do not expect a rigid or finished production plan—as local encounters and fieldwork will naturally shape your work—we ask you to be as specific as possible so that the selection committee can clearly understand your research questions, proposed methodology (e.g., fieldwork, interviews, material exploration), and initial ideas for public sharing. Rather than a set artwork design, please present a clear, well-articulated inquiry and a vivid vision of how you imagine spending your time and conducting your research in Kyoto.
[JP] 現地での出会いやフィールドワークによって計画が柔軟に変化することを考慮しているため、固まり切った作品制作計画である必要はありません。しかしながら、選考委員会が応募者の「リサーチの問い（問い立て）」や「京都での滞在・リサーチの具体的なイメージ」をしっかりと理解できるよう、できる限り詳しく記載していただくことを推奨します。完成された制作設計図ではなく、明確な探求心と具体性を持ったリサーチの方向性を示してください。
Q7. What research opportunities and local connections will be available during the residency? / レジデンス期間中には、どのようなリサーチの機会や地域とのつながりがありますか？

[EN] The program, organized by the City of Kyoto, is a new initiative that began with fundamental questions surrounding the inheritance and continuity of traditional industries and crafts. This program began with questions surrounding Kyoto City’s traditional industries and the continuation of craft traditions. With coordination by the program team and support from City of Kyoto, participants will have opportunities to connect with traditional craft workshops, artisans, researchers, local residents, and local creators in Kyoto. Participants will also have opportunities to conduct fieldwork in the Ninose area, which has deep historical ties to woodturners and other forms of craft-making, and to engage with the culture and community of the Yoshida district, where the residency is based.
Please note: Introductions to and visits with workshops and artisans require prior coordination. Depending on their availability and circumstances, we may not always be able to accommodate specific requests.
[JP] 京都市が主催する本プログラムは、伝統産業や工芸の継承を巡る「問い」からスタートした新規プロジェクトです。プログラムチームのコーディネートおよび京都市のサポートにより、京都市内の伝統工芸工房、職人、研究者、地域住民、地域クリエイターとの交流・取材機会が提供されます。また、木地師などモノづくりに深いゆかりを持つ二ノ瀬地区でのフィールドワークや、滞在拠点である吉田地区の文化・コミュニティとの接点を得ることができます。

Q8. Do I need to speak Japanese? Is language support available? / 日本語を話す必要はありますか？ また、言語面でのサポートはありますか？

[EN] Fluency in Japanese is not required. English will be the primary language used by the program team for orientation, key workshop visits, exchange events, and meetings related to local engagement. Asterisk in Residence Kyoto office team will also provide interpretation support and coordination as needed.

Q9. What kind of final outcome is expected from the residency? / レジデンスの最終的な成果として、どのようなものが求められますか？

[EN] The final outcome does not need to be a finished or sellable artwork. We welcome diverse forms of expression and documentation, such as research presentations, open studios, talks, ZINEs/publications, exhibitions, workshops, tea gatherings, or performances. The final sharing is viewed as an opportunity to foster dialogue with the local community rather than presenting a "completed product."

Q10. Can I apply as a duo or team, or bring my family? / デュオやチームでの応募は可能ですか？ また、家族を同伴することはできますか？

[EN] Yes, duos, couples, or small teams (up to 2 adults, or a family with up to 2 children) may apply together. However, please note that only one private room is provided at KONOE AIR 7 RESIDENCE, and the financial grant (travel and production stipend) is awarded per selection/party, meaning it must be shared among team members. Extra travel and personal expenses for family/partners must be self-funded.
[JP] ユニットやデュオ、家族（大人：最大2名＋子供：最大2名まで）での応募・滞在も可能です。ただし、提供される滞在部屋は「1部屋（個室）のみ」となります。また、渡航費補助およびリサーチ・制作費補助は「1採択枠（1組）」の定額支給となるため、メンバー内で分配していただく形になります。同伴されるご家族等の追加渡航費・生活費は自己負担となります。
Q11. How does the selection process work? / 選考はどのように行われますか？

[EN] The selection process consists of two stages:
- Application Cap: Applications are strictly limited to the first 50 submissions via the online form (Google Form), opening on August 15 at 10:00 AM JST. The form will close automatically once 50 applications have been received.
- Review & Interviews: Following a document review by the selection committee, shortlisted candidates will be invited to online interviews in early-to-mid September. Final results will be announced in late September.

Q12. Has this residency been offered before? / このレジデンスは、これまでにも実施されたことがありますか？

[EN] It is a model project hosted by the Kyoto City Creative Industry Promotion Office, and the first initiative by Asterisk in residence Kyoto as a residency program specializing in traditional crafts. While our collaborators have extensive individual experience in running artist-in-residence programs, providing learning opportunities for traditional craft techniques, and promoting traditional crafts internationally, this initiative represents a new, collaborative platform that brings together these diverse networks.

Q13. Can my research include craftspeople, workshops, or craft traditions outside the immediate residency area? / 滞在拠点周辺以外の職人や工房、工芸についてもリサーチできますか？

[EN] Yes, your research does not need to be strictly limited to the immediate residency area. Depending on your project proposal and needs, the program team and the Kyoto City Government will do their best to connect you with relevant craftspeople, workshops, and traditions within our network across the broader Kyoto area.
Please note: Introductions are subject to prior discussion and availability, as some artisans or facilities outside our direct network may require additional coordination.

Q14.When does the residency take place, and how long is the residency period? / レジデンスはいつ実施され、滞在期間はどのくらいですか？

[EN] The residency will take place for approximately one month between early January and mid-February 2027. Exact arrival and departure dates will be determined after the selection process in consultation with the selected participant, the host, and Asterisk in Residence Kyoto office.
[JP] レジデンスは、2027年1月上旬から2月中旬までの期間のうち、約1か月間実施します。具体的な到着日・出発日については、選考後、採択者・受入先・アスタリスク事務局の三者で相談のうえ決定します。
Q15. What costs are covered by the residency? Is accommodation provided, and are there any participation fees or stipends? / レジデンスではどのような費用がカバーされますか？宿泊施設の提供や参加費、助成金・滞在費の支給はありますか？
A15.
[EN] The program provides accommodation for the one-month residency period, as well as financial support for travel, research, and production. The following support is provided to each selected grant/party:
- Accommodation: One private room for the one-month residency period
- Travel Grant: JPY 100,000(inc.tax)
- Research & Production Grant: JPY 100,000(inc.tax)
The Research & Production Grant may be used for project-related expenses, including local transportation. All project-related expenses must be approved in advance by Asterisk in Residence Kyoto office.
Please note that the following expenses are not covered by the program:
- Meals and personal food expenses
- Personal and household supplies
- Visa application fees
- Travel and health insurance (participants are required to arrange their own insurance)
- Accommodation outside the official residency period
- Major production expenses that have not been approved in advance
- Travel and accommodation costs for accompanying family members or partners
- Other personal expenses
[JP] プログラムでは、1か月間の滞在先に加え、渡航およびリサーチ・制作にかかる費用の一部を支援します。採択された各組に対し、以下の支援を提供します。
- 宿泊場所： レジデンス期間中（1か月間）の個室1室
- 渡航費補助（上限）： 100,000円（税込）
- リサーチ・制作費補助： 100,000円（税込）
リサーチ・制作費補助は、現地交通費を含むプロジェクトに関連する費用に使用できます。ただし、プロジェクトに関する支出については、事前にアスタリスク事務局の承認が必要です。
なお、以下の費用はプログラムによる支援の対象外となります。
- 食費
- 個人用品・生活用品
- ビザ申請費用
- 海外旅行保険・医療保険（参加者自身での加入が必要です）
- 正式なレジデンス期間外の宿泊費
- 事前承認を受けていない高額な制作費
- 同伴する家族・パートナーの渡航費および宿泊費
