Selection Results: Kyoto Traditional Crafts Research Residency 2026|公募選考結果のお知らせ「京都伝統工芸国際リサーチレジデンス 2026」
We are delighted to announce the creator selected for the Kyoto Traditional Crafts Research Residency 2026.
This international research residency looks at Kyoto's traditional crafts as living practices shaped by materials, landscape, and local communities. Our Open Call this summer drew many passionate applications from around the world. After a careful review and online interviews, we are pleased to introduce the following creator.
During the one-month residency, the resident will stay at KONOE AIR 7 RESIDENCE in Sakyo Ward, and carry out field research in Ninose, a mountain district in northern Kyoto with long ties to woodturning and lacquer craft. Through conversations with craftspeople, researchers, and local residents, they will develop a project rooted in the place.

Grew up in a family of carpenters going back several generations and practiced in the workshop of his father and grandfather before studying architecture. He graduated under Bijoy Jain and Mario Botta in 2023; since then, most of his work has taken shape in workshops rather than in offices.
Several years at Studio Anne Holtrop in Bahrain, where he has been responsible for the prototyping workshop and material research, have brought these methods to the scale of the building. The research involved materials the architectural field has no time for, and the ways in which the conditions of a place alter their state.
His current practice explores how built environments and their ephemeral elements, such as sound, smell and light, create atmospheres through structures linked to social interactions. How an object becomes an artifact and how space can support memory are questions worked through material in the form of sculpture, furniture and architecture.

Residency Plan
Ninose's history with kijishi, woodturners who settled where the trees grew, is Łukasz's starting point. From the lathe, his research opens out to Kyoto's wider craft ecology, including lacquer, paper, bamboo, textile, and umbrella-making, read through four lenses: material, gesture, word, and smell. Over four weeks he will collect, interview, draw and write, and experiment by making a new tool. The residency ends with an exhibition of the whole research as a cabinet of curiosities of the valley.
