About you

I am a contemporary artist working mostly in the field of painting, and I support myself by creating children's book illustrations, character designs, and backgrounds for animation. My main interest, and the subject most present in my work is what it means to exist as a woman in a patriarchal, biased, and often unforgiving environment. Some of my work combines artificial intelligence and art history in the hopes of revealing the biases embedded within both, creating a new form of existence in the figure of a woman-goddess, removed from gender and its expectations. Recently, I have shifted my focus toward a more personal subject, the invisible labour women perform in creating and transmitting culture through practices such as embroidery, silk reeling, and other forms of handcraft traditionally done by women. Through this research, I explore erased histories, care as an inherent part of communal work, and the mutual support and sisterhood that emerge through these shared practices.

Your plan during the residency

During the residency, Lea will research collaborative handcraft traditions in Japan, including historical practices such as senninbari (“thousand-stitch belts”) as well as contemporary craft communities. Her research will explore how handwork has created connections between people and the roles these practices have played within communities.
She will also hold a workshop in which local participants contribute unwanted clothing and use the fabric to create patchwork cushion covers together. Through the process, she hopes to explore how making by hand can encourage conversation and interaction, and how the finished objects, remaining in the community, might continue to spark new connections and conversations over time.
