Kyoto Guest House 31 is an artist-friendly accommodation operated by KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE. Located in a local residential area where visitors can experience everyday life in Kyoto, the facility aims to provide an environment where creative practice and community engagement naturally intersect.
Situated away from the city's heavily touristed districts, the guesthouse offers a quieter and more authentic experience of Kyoto, making it suitable for both short- and long-term stays. The surrounding neighbourhood features traditional shopping streets, independently run cafés and restaurants, local markets, and community gathering places, allowing residents to experience Kyoto's culture through everyday life.
The guesthouse is also connected to a wider network of community cafés, cultural events, and intercultural exchange programmes organised by the operating organisation. Residents may have opportunities to meet local residents, international communities, students, and fellow creatives. 京都ゲストハウス31は、 KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE が運営する、アーティスト・イン・レジデンス対応型の滞在施設です。京都の暮らしを体感できるローカルエリアに位置し、制作活動と地域交流が自然に交差する環境を目指しています。
施設は、一般的な観光地とは異なる“生活する京都”に近い距離感を持ち、長期滞在にも適した落ち着いた住宅地域にあります。周辺には昔ながらの商店街や個人経営の飲食店、地元住民が集う市場や喫茶店が点在し、日常の風景の中に京都らしい文化が息づいています。
また、運営団体が展開するコミュニティカフェや多文化交流イベントとも連携しており、滞在アーティストが地域住民や在住外国人、学生などと交流できる機会もあります。単なる宿泊施設ではなく、「地域と創作をつなぐ拠点」として機能することを目指しています。

The guesthouse is located in the Saiin area of Kyoto, offering convenient access to the city centre while retaining the atmosphere of a local neighbourhood largely untouched by mass tourism.
Several public transportation options are available nearby, including Hankyu Railway and the Keifuku Railway (Randen), providing easy access throughout Kyoto.
The Randen line in particular passes through historic streetscapes, independent shops, and residential neighbourhoods that preserve the character of everyday Kyoto. The area offers a slower and more local experience of the city beyond its major tourist attractions.

KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE and Blending Community are community-based initiatives operating in Kyoto's Saiin area, focusing on intercultural exchange, community building, and social connection.
Founded in 2019 as a hybrid laundromat and community café, the space serves as a gathering place for local residents, students, international residents, travellers, and people from diverse backgrounds.
The organisation has hosted a wide range of public programmes, including intercultural events, art exhibitions, shared kitchen projects, neighbourhood walks, language exchange gatherings, and community workshops.
Guided by the idea of blending different cultures, values, and perspectives, the organisation seeks to create opportunities for meaningful connections between local and international communities, art and everyday life, and people from diverse backgrounds.
Director Profile
Rie Yamamoto - Founder and Director, KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE / Blending Community
Born and raised in Kyoto, Rie Yamamoto is a third-generation Korean resident in Japan whose work focuses on intercultural exchange, community development, and social inclusion.
After working in publishing and legal services, she moved to South Korea and worked in project coordination between Japanese and Korean partners at a multinational company. Returning to Kyoto, she founded KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE in 2019 and has since developed a range of initiatives connecting local communities and international exchange.
Her current activities include organising community events, supporting international residents and students, facilitating art projects, and operating local media initiatives.
Her work is grounded in the belief that everyday local life contains valuable insights into creativity, diversity, and coexistence.

運営団体である KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE ／「ブレンディングコミュニティ」は、京都・西院エリアを拠点に、多文化共生や地域コミュニティづくりをテーマに活動しています。
コインランドリーとカフェを融合させたコミュニティスペースとして2019年にスタートし、地域住民・学生・在住外国人・旅行者など、多様な人々が交わる“サードプレイス”を運営しています。
これまでに、国際交流イベント、アート展示、シェアキッチン企画、まち歩き、語学交流会、地域ワークショップなど、数多くの市民参加型プロジェクトを実施してきました。
「異なる文化や価値観を混ぜ合わせ、新しいコミュニティを生み出す」という理念のもと、地域と海外、アートと日常、人と人をゆるやかにつなぐ活動を続けています。
代表プロフィール
山本理恵 KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE／ブレンディングコミュニティ代表
京都生まれ・京都育ち。在日コリアン3世としての背景を持ち、日本と韓国の両文化を行き来しながら、多文化共生やコミュニティデザインに関わる活動を続けている。
出版社・法律事務所勤務を経て韓国へ渡り、多国籍企業で日韓間のプロジェクトコーディネート業務に従事。その後帰国し、2019年にKYOTO LAUNDRY CAFEを開業。地域コミュニティと国際交流を融合した独自の場づくりを展開している。
現在は、地域イベントの企画運営、留学生や在住外国人との交流活動、アートプロジェクト、ローカルメディア運営など、多分野を横断しながら活動中。
「地域の日常にこそ、多文化共生や創造性のヒントがある」という考えのもと、京都のローカルコミュニティを舞台に、人と人が自然につながる場づくりを実践している。

Ukyo Ward is one of Kyoto's most distinctive districts, where nature, residential neighbourhoods, and historical culture coexist.
The area includes well-known destinations such as Arashiyama and Uzumasa, while also maintaining a strong sense of everyday local life. This combination allows residents to experience a side of Kyoto that extends beyond tourism.
Morning markets, conversations in local shopping streets, independent cafés, and the scenery of the Randen tram line all contribute to an environment rich in creative inspiration.
The Randen railway remains an important transportation line for local residents and reflects the slower pace of everyday life in Kyoto. Along its route are small galleries, second-hand bookstores, workshops, and residential neighbourhoods that reward exploration on foot.
The area is also home to several universities and a diverse population of students, international residents, and people from different cultural backgrounds, creating a unique blend of traditional Kyoto culture and contemporary multicultural life.

観光名所だけではない“暮らしの京都”を感じられる点が、この地域の大きな魅力です。朝の市場、商店街の会話、地元の喫茶店、路面電車の走る風景など、日常そのものが創作のインスピレーションになります。
京福電鉄（嵐電）は、地元住民の生活路線として親しまれており、ゆっくりとした時間が流れるローカル京都を象徴する存在です。沿線には小さなギャラリーや古書店、町工場、昔ながらの住宅街などが点在し、徒歩での散策からも多くの発見があります。

- Production and activity space: The cafe space, exhibition walls, event space, and other areas can be used for research, production, exhibitions, workshops, talks, open studios, and related activities.
- Kitchen: Activities related to food using the shared kitchen or cafe kitchen may be discussed depending on the content of the proposal.
- Laundry facilities: The coin laundry inside the facility may be referred to or used in relation to the creator’s research or activities.
- Exhibition and presentation environment: Opportunities can be arranged to share the process or outcomes of the residency using the exhibition walls, cafe space, and event space.
- Connections with the local community: Creators can develop their activities while connecting with local residents, foreign residents, volunteers involved in multicultural coexistence, university students, local creators, and others.

- ランドリー設備：施設内のコインランドリーを、リサーチや活動の文脈に応じて参照・活用することができます。
- 展示・発表環境：展示壁面、カフェスペース、イベントスペースを活用し、滞在中のプロセスや成果を共有する機会を設けることができます。
- 地域との接点：地域住民、外国人住民、多文化共生に関わるボランティア、大学生、地域のクリエイター等と接点を持ちながら活動できます。
◎Precautions and Prohibitions
This residence is not a programme based on the assumption of a quiet private studio or a completely independent production environment. During the residency, creators will share the space with cafe and laundry users, local people, event participants, and others. Therefore, not only planned exchanges, but also daily conversations, everyday sounds, and unexpected events may influence the creator’s practice or research. This residence is more suitable for creators who can work while responding to people and situations in an open place, rather than those who prioritise working alone in a highly concentrated environment.
Accommodation is planned to be located near the facility, but the surrounding environment may include sounds such as trains. Applicants who are highly sensitive to noise should confirm this in advance.
Information about the kitchen during the stay
Japanese home-cooking classes are regularly held in the shared kitchen on the first floor of the accommodation facility. Creators may also be able to experience these classes. However, for those who plan to cook for themselves regularly, there may be some restrictions on the times when the accommodation kitchen can be used. Available times will be shared during the residency.
In addition, this facility is a simple accommodation facility in a guesthouse style, using shared shower rooms and toilets. The living space is equipped with a dedicated refrigerator, and facilities are prepared so that creators can stay without major inconvenience. However, please note in advance that the environment is different from a standard hotel.
◎注意事項・禁止事項
本レジデンスは、静かな個室アトリエや完全に独立した制作環境を前提としたプログラムではありません。滞在中は、カフェやランドリーの利用者、地域の人々、イベント参加者などと空間を共有しながら活動することになります。そのため、予定された交流だけでなく、日々の会話、生活音、偶発的な出来事が制作やリサーチに影響する可能性があります。一人で集中して制作する時間を最優先したい方よりも、開かれた場所の中で人や状況に応答しながら活動できる方に向いています。
宿泊場所は施設の近隣を予定していますが、周辺環境には電車の音などがある可能性があります。音に非常に敏感な方は、事前に確認が必要です。
【滞在中のキッチンに関するご案内】
滞在施設1階の共用キッチンでは、定期的に日本の和食料理教室を開催しております。クリエイターの方もご体験していただけます。ただし、普段に自炊をお考えの方の場合、宿泊施設キッチンご利用時間に一部制限が生じる場合があります。利用可能時間については、滞在時に随時ご案内いたします。
また、本施設はゲストハウス形式の共同シャワールームやトイレを使用する簡易宿泊施設となっております。滞在スペースには専用冷蔵庫を備えており、生活面でのご不便な点がないよう設備を整えておりますが、一般的なホテルとは異なる環境であることをあらかじめご了承ください。
