略歴 / Short Biography
Yu-Hong Chiangは、台湾・台中を拠点に活動するグラフィックデザイナーで、独立系書店兼オルタナティブな文化スペース「Artqpie」のメンバーです。エディトリアルデザイン、ビジュアル・アイデンティティ、ブランディング、インディペンデント出版など、幅広い領域で活動しています。近年は、インタビューや出版、展覧会、リサーチを通して、読書空間と地域コミュニティ、公共との関係を探っています。
また、さまざまな都市の独立系書店や読書コミュニティを調査する継続的なリサーチプロジェクト「Plan:Sector」の発起人でもあります。デザインと出版を通して、人と本、そして都市のあいだに新たな対話を生み出すことを目指しています。
Yu-Hong Chiang is a graphic designer based in Taichung, Taiwan, and a member of Artqpie, an independent bookstore and alternative cultural space. His professional and creative practice spans editorial design, visual identity, branding, and independent publishing. Through interviews, publications, exhibitions, and research, his recent work explores the relationships between reading spaces, local communities, and the public.
He is the initiator of Plan:Sector, an ongoing research project that investigates independent bookstores and reading communities across different cities. Through design and publishing, he seeks to create new dialogues between people, books, and cities.

活動について / About you
私は、一見すると対照的な二つの領域を行き来しながら活動するデザイナーだと考えています。グラフィックデザインや印刷物、インディペンデント出版を軸に活動する一方で、AIを活用したビジュアル制作チームの一員としても仕事をしています。こうした二つの領域のあいだに立つことで、印刷メディアならではの魅力や価値をより強く意識するようになりました。同時に、テクノロジーが変化し続けるなかで、グラフィックデザインや出版がどのように思考性や意義を保ち続けられるのかを探っています。
また、デザインだけでなく、知らない都市を歩き、そこで出会うものを観察することも、自身の制作活動にとって欠かせない要素になっています。旅をすることで、リサーチや出版、ビジュアル・ストーリーテリングに対する新たな視点が生まれ、それは「Plan:Sector」のようなプロジェクトにも影響を与えています。
時間をかけて本を読み、街を観察し、記録することは、その都市やそこで暮らす人々を理解するための、最も大切な方法のひとつだと考えています。
I see myself as a designer working between two seemingly opposite worlds. While my practice is rooted in graphic design, printed matter, and independent publishing, I also work as part of an AI-driven visual production team. Standing between these two fields has made me appreciate the unique qualities of printed media even more, while encouraging me to continuously explore how graphic design and publishing can remain thoughtful and relevant in an evolving technological landscape.
Beyond design, exploring unfamiliar cities has become an essential part of my creative practice. Traveling often inspires new perspectives on research, publishing, and visual storytelling, shaping the way I approach projects such as Plan:Sector.I believe that slowing down to read, observe, and document a place is one of the most meaningful ways to understand a city and its people.
滞在中の活動予定 / Your plan during the residency
滞在中は、読書空間と地域文化、都市のアイデンティティの関係を探る継続的なリサーチ／制作プロジェクト「Plan:Sector」を、京都でも展開する予定です。共同書庫をはじめ、独立系書店、私設図書館、出版に関わるスペースなどを訪れ、それぞれの読書空間が地域のコミュニティをどのように形づくり、都市の文化的な特徴をどのように映し出しているのかを探ります。
リサーチでは、共有型の図書館であり、読書を通じたコミュニティでもある共同書庫に特に焦点を当てます。参与観察やインタビュー、記録、書店員や出版社、文化活動に携わる人々との対話を通して、個人の蔵書がどのように共有の文化資源となっていくのか、また読書の場がどのように対話や交流、コミュニティを育んでいるのかを考察したいと考えています。
これまで台中や東京で行ってきたリサーチを土台に、今回の滞在では、リサーチ、デザイン、インディペンデント出版を通して台中と京都の文化的なつながりを深め、本と人、そして都市のあいだに新たな対話が生まれるきっかけをつくることを目指します。
During the residency, I plan to extend Plan:Sector, an ongoing research and creative project exploring the relationships between reading spaces, local culture, and urban identity, to Kyoto. Through Kyodo Shoko, independent bookstores, private libraries, and publishing spaces, I hope to further investigate how different reading spaces shape local communities and reflect the cultural identity of a city.
My research will focus on Kyodo Shoko as a shared library and reading community. Through participant observation, interviews, documentation, and conversations with booksellers, publishers, and cultural practitioners, I hope to better understand how personal book collections become shared cultural resources, and how reading spaces foster dialogue, exchange, and community.
Building on my previous research in Taichung and Tokyo, I hope this residency will strengthen the cultural connections between Taichung and Kyoto through research, design, and independent publishing, creating new opportunities for dialogue between books, people, and cities.
