🇨🇲 Jean David Nkot
Short Biography
Jean David Nkot (b. 1989, Douala, Cameroon) is a painter whose work engages deeply with the human condition. After earning a degree in drawing and painting from the Institute of Fine Arts in Foumban, he participated in the “Post-Master” Moving Frontiers program at the National School of Arts of Paris-Cergy (France). He has received multiple distinctions in sculpture, installation, and painting, and has worked closely with artists such as Hervé Youmbi, Salifou Lindou, Jean Jacques Kanté, Pascal Kenfack, and Ruth Belinga. Nkot’s recent work focuses on the exploitation of raw materials in Africa, the economic and political stakes behind it, and the human and environmental toll of global capitalism.
ジャン＝ダヴィッド・ンコ（1989年、カメルーン・ドゥアラ生まれ）は、人間の状態をテーマとする画家。フンバン美術学院で絵画・ドローイングの学位を取得後、フランスのパリ＝セルジー国立美術学校「ポストマスター Moving Frontiers」プログラムに参加。彫刻・インスタレーション・絵画の分野で数々の受賞歴を持ち、エルヴェ・ユンビ、サリフ・リンドゥ、ジャン＝ジャック・カンテ、パスカル・ケンファック、ルース・ベリンガらと緊密に制作活動を行ってきた。近年は、アフリカにおける天然資源の搾取、その背後にある経済的・政治的利害、そしてグローバル資本主義が人間や自然にもたらす負荷を中心に制作している。
About you
Jean’s paintings highlight the hidden labor and struggles of individuals whose work sustains contemporary life yet remains invisible. By portraying them as contemporary icons, he challenges viewers to reconsider economic models that prioritize profit over human and environmental well-being. His recent practice integrates an ecological perspective, emphasizing that humanity and the environment are inseparable and must be protected together. Through his art, he seeks to raise awareness, provoke reflection, and inspire hope—inviting audiences to transcend differences and connect through shared stories and life trajectories.
ジェーンの絵画は、現代社会を支えながらも可視化されにくい人々の労働と苦悩を描き、彼らを現代のアイコンとして位置づけることで、利益を優先する経済モデルを人間と環境の両面から問い直す。近年はエコロジーの視点を取り入れ、人間と環境は切り離せず、共に守られるべき存在であることを強調している。彼の作品は、現実への理解を促し、良心を揺さぶり、希望を伝える。異なる背景や価値観を超えて結びつくこと、他者の物語や人生から着想を得ることを観客に呼びかけている。
Your plan during the residency
Jean David:
Interested in working in serigraphy , touching the subjects of colors and landscape. Maybe finding a link between “views” and setting.
Explore the city deeply and maybe find ties between Cameroon x Japan through values/customs, food , community , culinary and others.
The artist would also like to explore local history and perhaps fork with ceramic/porcelain.
シルクスクリーン（セリグラフィー）の制作に興味があり、色彩や風景のテーマに触れたいと考えています。「眺め」とその環境との関係性を探ることも目指しています。都市を深く探訪し、カメルーンと日本の価値観や習慣、食、コミュニティ、料理などのつながりを見つけられたらと思います。また、地元の歴史も探求し、陶芸・磁器との関連を試みる可能性もあります。
Sten (the curator):
I would like to further my curatorial practice and deeply immerse myself in Kyoto’s surroundings and scenenery. Through literary/writing I wish to portray my residency with documentation of any sort. I am also very interested in meditation/yoga practices , matcha ceremonies.

私はキュレーションの実践をさらに深め、京都の周囲や景観に深く浸りたいと考えています。文学や文章を通して、滞在期間のあらゆるドキュメンテーションを記録として表現したいです。また、瞑想やヨガの実践、抹茶の茶会にも非常に関心があります。オープンマインドでこの滞在に臨みたいです。
