Juhyun Hwang
Short Biography
Juhyun Hwang – artist and educator – explores the inner landscape through the lens of photography. He recent works delve into the visual language of the unconscious, examining how internal states are projected and perceived by others. Guided by instinct and emotion, her process involves a deep engagement with the invisible—revealing what lies beneath through subtle, atmospheric imagery. He practice sits at the intersection of psychology and aesthetics, drawing from both academic research and intuitive exploration. Trained in Photography Design at Hongik University’s Graduate School of Industrial Arts and currently teaching at Dongseo University, He combines technical knowledge with a sensitivity to the immaterial. While her exhibition history is still emerging, He has shown her work in various group exhibitions across Korea and China, including Korean Photographic Society International Exhibition (Nanjing University of the Arts, 2019), Photo Speaks (Sangmyung University Art Center, 2018), and POST PHOTO (Inyoung Gallery, 2018). Him book-based photographic projects have received international recognition, earning Honorable Mentions in the Book–Fine Art category at both the 2020 BIFA (Budapest) and the 2018 TIFA (Tokyo). Her works suggest that even the most elusive aspects of self can be traced—through shadow, light, and stillness.

ファン・ジュヒョンの近年の作品では、無意識がどのように他者に視覚的に表現されるのかをテーマに、内面の状態を映し出す視覚言語を掘り下げている。直感と感情に導かれながら、目に見えないものとの深い対話を通して、光や影、静けさの中に潜む何かを写し取るプロセスを大切にしている。彼女の実践は、心理と美学の交差点に位置し、学術的な知見と感性的な探究の双方から成り立っている。弘益大学大学院 産業美術学部 写真デザイン専攻で学び、現在は東西大学 実用コンテンツ学科で教鞭をとるなど、理論と技術の両面に根ざした活動を続けている。まだ展示歴は多くないものの、中国や韓国の複数のグループ展に参加しており、主な展示に、2019年《韓国写真協会国際展》（中国・南京芸術大学）、2018年《Photo Speaks》（祥明大学アートセンター）、《POST PHOTO》（Inyoung Gallery）、《PHOTO MAY》（弘益大学現代美術館）などがある。また、写真集形式の作品では国際的な評価も受けており、2020年のBIFA（ブダペスト国際写真賞）、2018年のTIFA（東京国際写真賞）いずれもBook–Fine Art部門で入選を果たしている。
About you
A Plan During the Residency
During my residency in Kyoto, I plan to develop a media art project that explores the relationship between time, memory, and human existence. Composed of layered traditions, urban landscapes, and disappearing spaces, Kyoto offers a unique backdrop to investigate how memory is inscribed, erased, and reimagined. My approach will integrate AI-based video, photography, and subtle animation, positioning the work at the intersection of the poetic and the technological.
At the heart of this project is the visualization of memory traces. I intend to film alleys, workshops, and hidden corners of the city, while also engaging with people through interviews and face recordings. These faces will serve as temporal bridges, where the present expands into both past and future. By using AI to transform these records into visual forms such as points, lines, and planes, I will experiment with reflecting how memory threads itself through space and time. In this way, the works will reveal an aesthetic dialogue between the tangible city and the intangible unconscious.
I am particularly interested in the metaphor of thread or string as a connector that binds reality, past, and future into a single continuum. While AI inherently operates outside direct human perception, I aim to draw it back into dialogue with human experience, suggesting that all times are connected by invisible cords. The result will be a series of poetic media works that invite viewers to step into Kyoto’s fading memories while opening a door toward what lies ahead.

京都に滞在する間、私は時間・記憶・人間存在の関係を探求するメディアアート・プロジェクトを展開する予定です。幾重にも重なる伝統や都市の風景、そして消えゆく空間で構成される京都は、記憶がどのように刻まれ、消え、再構築されていくのかを探るための独特な舞台となります。私のアプローチは、AIを活用した映像、写真、そして繊細なアニメーションを統合し、詩的なものと技術的なものが交差する地点に作品を置くことです。
本プロジェクトの中心は、記憶の痕跡を視覚化することにあります。私は路地や工房、街の隠れた一角を撮影すると同時に、インタビューや顔の記録を通じて人々と交流する計画です。これらの顔は、現在が過去と未来へと拡張される時間的な橋渡しの役割を果たします。AIを用いてこれらの記録を点、線、面といった視覚的形態に変換することで、記憶が時空を横断してどのように織り込まれていくのかを反映させる実験を行います。そうして作品は、有形の都市と無形の無意識の間にある美的対話を浮かび上がらせます。
私は特に、現実・過去・未来を一つの連続体として結びつける糸や紐のメタファーに関心を持っています。AIは本質的に人間の直接的な知覚の外側で作動しますが、私はすべての時間が見えない糸によってつながれていることを示唆し、それを再び人間の経験との対話へと引き戻したいと考えています。その成果は、観客を京都の消えゆく記憶へと誘いながら、同時に未来への扉を開く詩的なメディア作品群となるでしょう。
