UMEKOJI AREA / 梅小路
◎Overview
The Umekoji area is located to the west of Kyoto Station, surrounding the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market. Once a hub for railway transportation, it later became the heart of Kyoto’s food distribution after World War II. Today, the area is still home to many food processing businesses and wholesale or retail shops. As you walk down the streets, you’ll encounter lively scenes of people filleting fish at storefronts and turret trucks (small transport vehicles used in markets) zipping by. It’s a unique part of Kyoto—known as a neighborhood of commerce.
Because of this lively atmosphere, the area is also known for its tolerance of smells and sounds. In recent years, it has attracted a growing number of creative makers, including artists’ studios, craft beer breweries, and digital fabrication studios.
The “HAM Building,” which will serve as the base for this residency, is one such space. It was originally a food processing facility that has been renovated. Now, each floor hosts a different kind of activity: the first floor houses a company working with robotic arms and digital fabrication tools, the second is home to a business using 3D printers, and the third floor functions as a shared living space.
In Umekoji, the traditional food wholesale district and a new wave of creative makers come together. This intersection offers the potential for ideas that move freely across boundaries—both old and new.

梅小路エリアは、京都駅の西側に位置していて、京都中央卸売市場の周辺にあります。昔は鉄道輸送の拠点として、戦後は京都の食品流通の中心地にもなりました。多くの食品加工業者や卸・小売業者が軒を連ねており、通りを歩けば、店先で魚を捌く様子やターレット（市場などで用いられる小型の運搬車）が行き交うにぎやかな光景に出会えます。京都の中でも少し異色な「商いのまち」です。
そんな活気ゆえ、匂いや音に寛容であることもこのまちの特色のひとつで、最近はアーティストのアトリエやビールの醸造所、デジタルファブリケーションのスタジオなど、さまざまなものづくりの担い手がこの地に集まりはじめています。
今回のレジデンスの拠点となる「HAMビル」もそのひとつ。このエリアにあった元食品加工場を改修して生まれました。1階にはロボットアームやデジタルファブリケーション機材を扱う会社、2階には3Dプリンターを扱う企業、3階にはシェアハウスが入り、フロアごとに異なる活動が展開されています。
食品卸市場と新しいものづくりカルチャーが交差する梅小路エリアだからこそ、既存の枠組みを飛び越え、行き来するような自由な発想が生まれるかもしれません。
