◎Overview

The building was renovated in the 1940s. The founder, who was from Aomori Prefecture, met and befriended Shiko Munakata, a woodblock print artist from the same hometown. When Shiko came to Kyoto, the building was renovated so that he could stay and engage in creative activities. As Munakata was also involved in the folk art movement, the building has a folk art ambiance. In fact, an AIR existed here 80 years ago. We aim to once again make this building a place for AIR and a hub for cultural dissemination.

民藝を感じる建物は1940年代に改築されました。創業者は青森県出身で、同郷の板画家（「板」の字を使います）棟方志功と出会い親交を深めました。志功が京都に来たときは滞在し創作活動ができるよう改築されました。棟方は民藝運動にも参加していたため、建物は民藝の雰囲気を醸し出しています。まさに80年前、ここにAIRが存在していたのです。私たちは、この建物を再びAIRの場とし、文化発信の拠点にすることを目指しています。

Kyoto University of the Arts is a 1-minute walk away, and Kyoto University is a 20-minute walk away.

Adjacent to the mountains, it offers easy access to nature while also being a convenient area for living with many supermarkets, shops, and restaurants.

◎About the Operating Organization

Company Yamaguchi Shoten Co., Ltd. Founded in 1941 as an academic book publisher. After World War II, the main focus shifted to the production and sale of English teaching materials exclusively for schools. To continue providing the founder's vision of "creating an environment for the improvement of life and culture, and offering citizens the pursuit of knowledge and cultural refinement" in new forms as times change, the company began operating the "ISBN8411" space in 2022.

Host: Keiko Yamaguchi

While raising children, Keiko studied social issues in the "Social Innovation Course" at graduate school. After graduation, as her first step into professional life, she took charge of accounting at her husband's family business, "Yamaguchi Shoten." In 2016, when her husband—who was also the company president—passed away, she took over as the 5th generation president. Sympathizing with the founder's and her father-in-law's philosophy, Keiko is striving to realize, as the company's successor, the pursuit of what constitutes true richness for us as members of society. She is preparing new initiatives centered on the appeal of handicrafts (creativity, communication, immersion) and philosophy (the ability to think and adapt).

会社　株式会社山口書店　1941年に学術書出版社として創業。戦後は英語教材の学校専売品の制作・販売をメインとする。創業者の思い「生活・文化の向上の環境をつくり、知の探求と文化の研鑽を市民に」を、時代が変わっても形を変えて提供するため、2022年より『ISBN8411』スペースの運営を開始。

運営者自己紹介　山口けいこ

子育て中に大学院の「ソーシャルイノベーションコース」で社会の課題と解決策を学び、卒業後は社会への第一歩として、嫁ぎ先の家業「山口書店」の経理を担当しました。2016年に社長であり夫が他界し、5代目社長を引き継ぎました。創業者であり義父の考え方に共感し、私たち生活者の豊かさとは何かを追求していくことを、会社継承者として実現したいと奮闘中です。手芸の魅力（創造性、コミュニケーション、没頭）と哲学（考えて変化できる人）を軸に、新たな取り組みを準備しています。
