Mayar Salama
Short Biography
Mayar Salama is an urbanist, artist, designer and educator based in Cairo, Egypt, with a Master of Science degree in Architecture and Urban Design from the German University in Cairo. She currently teaches Design and Media at UK’s Coventry University, hosted by the Knowledge Hub Universities in Cairo. Her work merges academic insights with artistic exploration, showcasing a deep understanding of urban dynamics and visual cultures. Passionate about illustration and animation, Mayar’s art is defined by a keen eye for detail and compelling visual storytelling. She continually experiments with different mediums, broadening her creative horizons. Her interdisciplinary approach spans various forms of expression, resulting in a uniquely diverse body of work that reflects her commitment to both urban research and artistic innovation. Her work has also received regional recognition and has been exhibited in several cities across the SWANA region, Europe, and East Asia. She has collaborated with local and international individuals and institutions, such as the ICRC and Fairwork (Oxford Internet Institute), further extending her impact and reach.

About Me
I’m of Egyptian and Palestinian descent, born and raised in Cairo. My relationship with Cairo is a classic love-hate affair—it’s a city that’s as layered as it is indescribable. My masters thesis was tackling the intertwined nature of its market network with its historic urban core. My fascination with the sūqs (popular street markets) had driven me to map the entire network and collect photographic and archival material of the central nodes of the network, showing the parallel and fused growth of the city and its commercial network. It is an ongoing project that does not end with my thesis.
Right now, I’m working on my first graphic novel with Mariko Sugita, capturing six cities across Africa through an East Asian perspective—quite the cultural mashup!
私はエジプト人とパレスチナ人の血を引き、カイロで生まれ育ちました。私とカイロの関係は、典型的な愛憎劇です。私の修士論文は、カイロの市場ネットワークと歴史的な都市核との絡み合いについて取り組んだものでした。スーク（庶民的な露店市場）に魅了された私は、ネットワーク全体の地図を作成し、ネットワークの中心的な結節点の写真や記録資料を収集し、都市とその商業ネットワークの並行的かつ融合的な成長を示すことに没頭しました。これは現在進行中のプロジェクトであり、卒業論文で終わるものではありません。
現在、私は杉田真理子と一緒に、アフリカの6つの都市を東アジアの視点から捉えた、まさに文化のマッシュアップである初のグラフィック・ノベルに取り組んでいます。
I draw a lot of inspiration from artists like David Bowie and Palestinian hip-hop duo, Shabjdeed + Al Nather. I am especially appreciative of reinvention and genre-bending art that transcends and challenges our conventional understanding of artistic disciplines. Of course, my love for the classics is also eternal and irreplaceable. Egyptian artists, Abdelhalim Hafez and Umm Kulthum and Lebanese artist, Fairuz’s music are some of my all-time comfort sounds.
My fascination with Japanese culture was sparked by reading In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, Studio Ghibli films, and my introduction to the Japanese cuisine. To me, Ghibli films feel like a warm hug to the soul, especially the animated food frames— truly one of the most mesmerizing things to lay eyes on.
I speak both Arabic and English fluently. My knowledge of Japanese is limited to Duolingo level 1. 🙈 I am, however, currently on a 75-day streak and the green owl is very happy with me.
私は、デヴィッド・ボウイやパレスチナのヒップホップデュオ、シャブディード＋アル・ナザーといったアーティストから多くのインスピレーションを得ています。特に、従来の芸術分野の理解を超越し、挑戦するような再発明やジャンルを超えた芸術を高く評価しています。もちろん、古典への愛も永遠でかけがえのないものです。エジプトのアーティスト、アブデルハリム・ハフェズやウンム・クルトゥム、レバノンのアーティスト、フェアリーズの音楽は、私の心を和ませてくれるサウンドのひとつです。
日本文化に魅了されたきっかけは、谷崎潤一郎の『陰影礼讃』を読んだこと、スタジオジブリの映画、そして日本料理との出会いでした。私にとって、ジブリ映画は心を温かく抱きしめてくれるような感じがします。特に、アニメーションで描かれた食べ物のコマは、目を見張るものがあります。
私はアラビア語と英語を流暢に話すことができます。日本語の知識はDuolingoのレベル1程度です。とはいえ、現在75日連チャン中で、アオバズクも大喜びです🙈。
A plan during the residency
Coming from Cairo, where you often feel both overwhelmed and incredibly small in a massive megalopolis, I find that I project my experiences of my hometown onto every new city I visit. I expect Kyoto to feel entirely different physically, yet I can’t help but wonder if it will echo Cairo in unexpected ways.
In my graphic novel with Mariko Sugita, I’m illustrating Cairo from her perspective. I would like to be exploring Kyoto through my own Cairene/North African perspective this time. I hope to bring my experiences and subconscious impressions of Cairo along to Kyoto and see how they reshape my understanding of both cities. My goal is to create a series of comics or artworks that reflect this perspective, with cross-cultural exchange as the core theme.
I usually work with digital illustration, but for this project, I’m eager to experiment and incorporate some more manual techniques. I plan to blend photography and illustration, maybe even layering illustrations on top of photos or maps, and using everyday objects or materials to capture the essence of this cross-cultural journey. I can imagine the end result being an array of connected mixed media pieces.
巨大都市の中で圧倒され、信じられないほど小さく感じることの多いカイロ出身の私は、新しい都市を訪れるたびに故郷での経験を投影してしまいます。京都は、物理的にはまったく違う印象を受けるでしょうが、予期せぬ形でカイロに重なるのではないかと考えずにはいられません。
杉田真理子さんとのグラフィック・ノベルでは、彼女の視点からカイロを描いている。今回は、私自身のカイリーン／北アフリカの視点を通して京都を探検したい。私のカイロでの経験や潜在意識にある印象を京都に持ち込み、それが両都市に対する私の理解をどのように再構築するかを見てみたい。私の目標は、異文化交流を中心テーマとして、この視点を反映した一連のマンガやアート作品を制作することです。
私は普段、デジタル・イラストレーションを使って仕事をしていますが、今回のプロジェクトでは、より手作業に近いテクニックを取り入れてみたいです。写真とイラストレーションを融合させ、写真や地図の上にイラストレーションを重ねたり、日用品や素材を使って異文化交流の旅のエッセンスを表現するつもりです。最終的には、ミクストメディアのつながった作品が出来上がると想像しています。
