2025年1月28日、京都市が取り組むレジデンスプログラム「*** In Residence Kyoto(アスタリスク・イン・レジデンス 京都)」の第3回ミートアップイベントが開催されました。会場は、ドイツの文化機関であるゲーテ・インスティトゥートの施設「 ゲーテ・インスティトゥート ヴィラ鴨川」。レジデンスオーナーと海外クリエイターによるプレゼンテーションを中心に、4つの拠点(Bridge Studio/山口書店/シェアハウスEVER/PERSPECTIVE 工藝の森)でのレジデンスモデル事業の成果共有が行われました。
滞在期間は約1ヶ月。海外から訪れたクリエイターと、受け入れ先となるオーナーが得た学び、学生サポーター(サポートクルー)と連携しながらどのようにレジデンスが行われていったのか、そしてどう京都の魅力が発掘されていったのか。そこで語られたストーリーを追いかけます。

On January 28, 2025, the third MEETUP event for Kyoto City’s residency program, “*** In Residence Kyoto,” was held. The venue was Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa, a facility run by the German cultural institution Goethe-Institut.
The event featured presentations by residency hosts and international creators, with a focus on sharing the outcomes of the residency model projects conducted at four locations: Bridge Studio, Yamaguchi Bookstore, Share House EVER, and PERSPECTIVE Kogei no Mori.
Each residency lasted about one month. This report follows the stories shared during the event—what the overseas creators and their local hosts learned through the experience, how the residencies were carried out in collaboration with student supporters (Support Crew), and how new aspects of Kyoto’s charm were uncovered along the way.

「ぬか床のように循環する文化都市、京都」を目指して Toward Kyoto as a Cultural City of Continuous Circulation, Like a Nukadoko (Fermentation Bed)
寒さの厳しい1月の京都。ゲーテ・インスティトゥート ヴィラ鴨川のホールには、多くの参加者が集い、会場は熱気に包まれていました。「*** in Residence Kyoto」は、「京都の若者が世界の多彩な才能と交流する仕組みづくり」をコンセプトにスタートした京都市によるプログラムで、民間で創造的滞在の受け入れができるレジデンス事業者と連携しながら、アートや建築、ビジネスなど多様なクリエイティブ分野のクリエイターの受け入れを視野に入れています。
On a cold January day in Kyoto, the hall at Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa was filled with participants, and the atmosphere was full of energy. “*** in Residence Kyoto” is a program initiated by Kyoto City, based on the concept of creating a system where young people in Kyoto can engage with diverse global talents. By collaborating with private-sector residency operators who provide creative stay opportunities, the program aims to welcome creators from a wide range of creative fields—including art, architecture, business, and more.
まず登壇したのは、京都市長・松井孝治氏。近年、世界中でさまざまな紛争や対立、排他的な動きが増えている中、京都は伝統をベースにしつつ、広く多様な人や文化を受け入れ、新たな革新にチャレンジできるまちでありたいと話し、「まち全体を“アーティストインレジデンス”のようにしていく、それが理想だ」と続けます。
「京都は“ぬか床”のようなまちでありたい。ぬか味噌は、代々、家の当主が世話をして、いろいろな素材を受け入れながら発酵し、熟成を重ねることで味わいを増す。この京都でたくさんのクリエイターを受け入れ、彼らが与えてくれる新たな刺激をぬか床の養分のように吸収し、そうしてまた次のクリエイターを育むような、循環する文化都市を目指したい」と話し、会はスタートしました。
The first speaker was Koji Matsui, Mayor of Kyoto City.
He began by addressing the increasing conflicts, divisions, and exclusionary movements happening around the world today. Despite these global challenges, he expressed his hope that Kyoto would continue to be a city that embraces a wide diversity of people and cultures, while remaining rooted in its traditions, and boldly taking on new innovations.
“It’s our ideal,” he said, “to make the entire city itself like an ‘artist-in-residence’ program.”
He went on to share a metaphor:
“Kyoto should be like a nukadoko—a fermentation bed for pickling rice bran. Just as a nukadoko is carefully nurtured by each generation, accepting a variety of ingredients that ferment and mature over time to create deep and complex flavors, we want Kyoto to be a place that welcomes many creators. We will absorb the new energy and ideas they bring as nourishment for the city, and in doing so, foster the next generation of creators. Our vision is to build a cultural city of continuous circulation.”
With these words, the event officially began.
続いて登壇したのは、今回のミートアップを共催し、会場を提供してくださったドイツの文化機関・ゲーテ・インスティトゥート ヴィラ鴨川の館長、Enzio Wetzel氏。コロナ禍の5年間を振り返り、「国際交流が困難な時期もあったが、今では海外からの観光客が増え、むしろ溢れている印象がある」と言います。
「たとえば、ここヴィラ鴨川にはドイツのアーティストが滞在するが、彼らがローカルなコミュニティや隣人との関係を築くことで、より豊かな創造が生まれると感じている。京都には、ドイツ文化機関だけでなく、フランスやイタリアなど他の欧州文化機関も存在している。クリエイターたちを通じて、それぞれの文化の背景や価値観が交わり、新たなアイデアが芽吹いていく。それこそが私たちが目指す国際文化交流の形だ」とコメント。京都の魅力を最大限に活かすためにも、今回のようなオープンなミートアップの場は大変意義深いと、プロジェクトを熱く迎え入れました。
Next to take the stage was Enzio Wetzel, Director of Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa, the German cultural institution that co-hosted the meetup and provided the venue. Reflecting on the past five years of the COVID-19 pandemic, he remarked,
“There was a time when international exchange was extremely difficult. Now, however, it feels like there are more international visitors than ever—perhaps even an overflow.”
He continued,
“For example, here at Villa Kamogawa, we host artists from Germany. When they build relationships with local communities and neighbors, it leads to even richer creativity. In Kyoto, there are not only German cultural institutions but also French, Italian, and other European cultural organizations. Through creators, different cultural backgrounds and values interact, and from there, new ideas are born. That is precisely the kind of international cultural exchange we aim for.”
He concluded by emphasizing the significance of open events like this meetup, noting that they play an important role in making the most of Kyoto’s unique appeal. He warmly welcomed the project as a meaningful step toward deeper international collaboration.
「*** in Residence Kyoto」と4つのモデル事業 ** in Residence Kyoto and the Four Model Projects
2026年度以降の本格実施を見据えて、2024年度は4つのモデル事業を実施。レジデンス施設に海外から訪れたそれぞれのクリエイターの活動は、レジデンスオーナーに加え、京都の若者で組織されているサポートクルー(通称サポクル)が伴走するかたちで進められました。今回のミートアップでは、その成果を振り返り、得られた学びの共有を目指しています。
With full-scale implementation planned for fiscal year 2026 and beyond, four model projects were carried out in 2024.
At each residency facility, international creators engaged in their activities with the support of not only the residence owners but also the Support Crew—teams of young people from Kyoto who accompanied and assisted them throughout their stay.
This meetup aimed to reflect on the outcomes of those projects and share the insights and lessons learned from the experience.
1. 山口書店 × Mayar Salama(エジプト)/アナログな手描きで“街”を捉え直す 1. Yamaguchi Shoten × Mayar Salama (Egypt) Reinterpreting the "City" Through Hand-Drawn Analog Techniques
最初の事例は、1941年創業の出版社、今は文化拠点としても運営している「山口書店」とエジプト出身のクリエイター、Mayar Salama(通称:マヤール)による取り組みでした。山口書店は版画家の棟方志功と親交があり、彼が京都を訪れる際に制作に打ち込めるように整えた空間が残されています。今回、その歴史あるアトリエをレジデンスの場として開放しました。オーナーの山口ケイコさんは英語が得意ではないものの、サポートクルーの助力を得ながら、マヤールさんを茶農家や近所のカフェなどに案内したり、一緒に編み物やお茶会などを通して、手仕事や日本の暮らしを体験してもらいました。
The first case study featured a collaboration between Yamaguchi Bookstore, founded in 1941 and now also operating as a cultural hub, and Egyptian creator Mayar Salama.
Yamaguchi Bookstore has a historical connection with the renowned printmaker Shiko Munakata. The space he once used in Kyoto, designed to support his creative process, still remains—and for this project, it was opened as a residency studio.
Although the owner, Keiko Yamaguchi, is not fluent in English, she actively welcomed Mayar with the help of the Support Crew. Together, they visited a local tea farm and neighborhood cafés, and shared hands-on experiences such as knitting and tea gatherings. Through these activities, Mayar was able to engage with traditional Japanese crafts and everyday life.
都市計画家でありアーティストでもあるマヤールさんは、普段はデジタルツールを使って作品を制作していますが、「今回はアナログで描きたかった」と語り、スケッチブックを手にまちを巡りました。レジデンスのテーマは、都市の風景。京都の伝統的なまちの形や手仕事の文化に触発されたと話すマヤールさん。山口書店に残る棟方志功や河井寛次郎などの足跡に触れて感じ取った感情や、日々出会う人々とのコミュニケーションの温かさそのものを創作の源泉とし、制作を進めました。
Mayar Salama, an urban planner as well as an artist, typically creates her work using digital tools. However, she shared that this time she wanted to work by hand, and spent her days exploring the city with a sketchbook in hand.
The theme of her residency was urban landscapes. Inspired by Kyoto’s traditional city structure and its culture of craftsmanship, Mayar found creative motivation in both the legacy of artists such as Shiko Munakata and Kanjiro Kawai—whose presence still lingers at Yamaguchi Bookstore—and in the warmth of daily interactions with the people she met. These emotional connections became the foundation for her creative process during the residency.
「京都に来て驚いたのは、エジプトの首都・カイロのような大きな都市ではなかったこと。ミニマムなコミュニティのなかに身を置くからこそ得られるリアルな日本文化が刺激的だった。日常的に人と協働することで、新しいインスピレーションを得られた」とマヤールさん。「左京区への詩」というタイトルで、河井寛次郎や棟方志功から受け取ったインスピレーション、そして滞在先での思い出をリソグラフ作品にまとめあげました。
“What surprised me about Kyoto was that it wasn’t a big city like Cairo, the capital of Egypt,” Mayar shared.
“By placing myself within a small, close-knit community, I was able to experience an authentic side of Japanese culture that was truly stimulating. Collaborating with people in daily life gave me new inspiration.”
She compiled the inspiration she received from artists like Kanjiro Kawai and Shiko Munakata, along with memories from her stay, into a risograph artwork titled AN ODE TO SAKYO-KU.
2. Bridge Studio × Tsai Shih-Hsiang(台湾)/ローカルな暮らしの中での再発見と文化交流 2. Bridge Studio × Tsai Shih-Hsiang (Taiwan)Rediscovery and Cultural Exchange Within Local Daily Life
続いては、築古の建物をセルフリノベーションした「Bridge Studio」(左京区)。オーナーの杉田真理子さんは、レジデンス施設の連携、クリエイターの交流などを通してコミュニティづくりを実践してきた人物。本プロジェクトの事務局メンバーでもあります。今回は台湾のアーティスト兼キュレーター・Tsai Shih-Hsiang(通称:スティーブン)を迎え入れました。
The next case study features Bridge Studio, located in Sakyo Ward—a space that has been self-renovated from an old building.
The owner, Mariko Sugita, has long been dedicated to community-building through collaborations between residency facilities and creative exchanges among artists. She is also a core member of the organizing team for this project.
For this residency, Bridge Studio welcomed Tsai Shih-Hsiang (nicknamed “Steven”), an artist and curator from Taiwan.
「彼は台湾でもインディペンデントな施設を運営しており、助成金を活用しながらアーティストやクリエイターの滞在制作をサポートしている。レジデンス運営についてお互い学び合える、とても貴重な機会だった」と杉田さん。
“He runs an independent space in Taiwan, where he supports artists and creators in their residencies, making good use of grants and funding,” said Sugita.
“It was an incredibly valuable opportunity for us to learn from each other about how to operate residency programs.”
スティーブンさんは滞在中「日常の中にこそ差異の発見がある」と、非日常ではなく、日常の中での文化交流を目指して、台湾で生活する時と同じように、スーパーやコンビニを日常的に訪れました。京都の地名「高雄」が、台湾の地名と同じ読みを持つことに惹かれるなど、ローカルな探索を通して、タイトル「殘音」という作品テーマを着想しました。
During his stay, Steven expressed the idea that “it is in everyday life where we discover differences.” Rather than seeking extraordinary experiences, he aimed for cultural exchange rooted in daily life. Just as he would in Taiwan, he regularly visited local supermarkets and convenience stores.
He was also intrigued by the fact that the place name “Takao” in Kyoto shares the same pronunciation as a city in Taiwan (Kaohsiung). Through his local explorations, he developed the concept for his project titled Reverberations (殘音).
スティーブンさんは「台湾と日本では文化的背景が似ているところも多いけれど、だからこそ日常に潜む微差を見つけるのが面白かった」と話し、レジデンス滞在中には家でご飯を振る舞ったり、誰もが気軽に参加できる“日常の交流”を行いました。結果的にBridge Studioは、他のクリエイターや地域に住まう人など多様な人々が行き交うオープンな場となりました。今後も台湾×日本間でクリエイターを相互派遣できるような関係性が育まれそうです。
Steven shared, “Taiwan and Japan have many cultural similarities, and that’s precisely why it was so interesting to discover the subtle differences hidden in everyday life.”
During his residency, he often invited people over for home-cooked meals, creating opportunities for casual, everyday interactions that anyone could join.
As a result, Bridge Studio became an open space where a diverse mix of people—other creators, local residents, and more—came and went freely.
Moving forward, it seems likely that this experience will foster a relationship in which creators from Taiwan and Japan can participate in reciprocal exchange programs.
3. EVER × Paritosh Goel(インド)/起業家のためのシェアハウスで、新しいビジネスと学びを探る 3. EVER × Paritosh Goel (India) Exploring New Business Ideas and Learning Opportunities at a Shared House for Entrepreneurs
シェアオフィス&シェアハウス「EVER」(左京区)は、起業をめざす若者が集う拠点。経営者同士が衣食住を同じ場所で行い切磋琢磨する、“ときわ荘”的な環境が特徴です。そこへ招かれたのは、インドの建築家・都市計画家であり、アントレプレナーでもあるParitosh Goel(通称:パリトシュ)さんです。
EVER, a shared office and shared house located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, serves as a hub for young entrepreneurs. It offers an environment reminiscent of Tokiwa-so, where aspiring business owners live, work, and push each other to grow under the same roof.
Invited to join this space was Paritosh Goel, an architect, urban planner, and entrepreneur from India.
都地耕喜さん(EVER オーナー)は「高校生や中学生向けの起業支援プログラムにパリトシュさんをゲストスピーカーとして招いた」と話します。インドのスタートアップシーンやコロナ禍での取組事例などを共有することで、若い世代にも大きな刺激となりました。
Koki Tsuji, the owner of EVER, shared that they invited Paritosh as a guest speaker for their entrepreneurship support programs aimed at high school and junior high school students.
By sharing insights about India’s startup scene and examples of initiatives launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, Paritosh provided valuable inspiration and motivation to the younger generation.
パリトシュさんは、自転車やハイキングで京都を巡ったり、市内の職人の工房を訪問するなどして京都で様々な体験をしました。最終的に、地図をみんなで作るワークショップ「Kyoto Ephemera - 京都の本質をマッピングする」を開催し、「京都らしさとは何か」「伝統とモダンはどう同居しているか」といったテーマでディスカッションを行いました。「さまざまな視点からもう一度京都を知っていく過程が面白かった」とパリトシュさん。新たなビジネスアイデアが生まれる予感もあり、EVERのコミュニティメンバーにとっても、国際的な視点を取り入れる実験の場となりました。
Paritosh explored Kyoto in many ways during his stay—cycling, hiking, and visiting the workshops of local artisans.
He eventually organized a workshop titled Kyoto Ephemera: Mapping the Essence of Kyoto, where participants collaborated to create maps and engaged in discussions around themes such as “What makes Kyoto unique?” and “How do tradition and modernity coexist?”
“It was fascinating to rediscover Kyoto from so many different perspectives,” Paritosh reflected.
The experience also sparked the potential for new business ideas. For the members of the EVER community, the workshop became a valuable experimental space to incorporate international perspectives into their thinking and activities.
4. PERSPECTIVE/工藝の森 × Maxime Bellaunay(フランス)/京北の森と職人たちが紡ぎ出す、新しい木工のかたち 4. PERSPECTIVE / Kogei no Mori × Maxime Bellaunay (France) Exploring New Forms of Woodcraft, Woven from the Forests and Craftspeople of Keihoku
最後は、京都市右京区の京北エリアを拠点に、地域の自然とモノづくりの文化を行き来してその関係性を問い直す「PERSPECTIVE/工藝の森」。フランスから来日した家具職人・彫刻家のMaxime Bellaunay(通称:マキシム)さんは、自然の形や色をそのまま生かすものづくりを行う職人。人々がどのように風景と関係性を作っているか、どのように森と共に生きているかに関心を持ち、雪深い冬の京北で森と向き合いながら、地域の製材所や林業関係者を積極的に訪問し、インタビューを重ねました。
The final case study features PERSPECTIVE / Kogei no Mori, based in the Keihoku area of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. This initiative explores the relationship between the region’s natural environment and its craftsmanship traditions, questioning and redefining their connection.
Maxime Bellaunay, a furniture maker and sculptor from France, creates works that embrace the natural forms and colors of his materials. Deeply interested in how people build relationships with their landscapes and live in harmony with forests, Maxime spent his residency in Keihoku’s snowy winter, engaging directly with the forest. He actively visited local sawmills and forestry workers, conducting interviews to better understand their practices and perspectives.
「とんど焼き(※正月行事の一つ)に参加し、地域住民と一緒に火を囲みながら語らうなかで、職業や肩書を超えた“近所づきあい”を体験できたのも印象的だった」とマキシムさん。最終的には、京都市内で展示とワークショップを開催。森にある異なる色味の土を集めて、漆や石灰を混ぜて、それを木に塗り、森の素材を探索するプロトタイプ作品を制作。またそれぞれにインタビューした人の言葉も合わせて展示しました。
Maxime shared that one of his most memorable experiences was participating in the Tondo-yaki (a traditional Japanese New Year bonfire event).
“Gathering around the fire with local residents, I was able to experience a kind of neighborhood connection that transcended professions and titles,” he reflected.
In the final stage of his residency, Maxime held an exhibition and workshop in Kyoto City.
For the project, he collected soils of different colors from the forest, mixing them with lacquer and lime to create natural pigments. These were then applied to wood, resulting in a series of prototype works that explored the materials of the forest in a new way.
The exhibition also featured quotes from the people he had interviewed during his residency, adding their voices to the story of his exploration.
ワークショップでは、浄土寺の会場近隣の森の中で素材を採取し、それを使ってモビールを作るなど、参加者にとっても森とのつながりを五感で味わえる体験となりました。「滞在中に実験した素材やアプローチはフランスに持ち帰り、さらにリサーチを続けて作品に仕上げたい」と意欲をみせ、今後も継続して京都を訪れたいという言葉を残してくれました。
During the workshop, participants gathered materials from the nearby forest surrounding Jodoji Temple, and used them to create mobiles and other pieces. It became a hands-on experience where they could engage with the forest through all five senses, deepening their connection with nature.
Maxime expressed his enthusiasm for continuing this work, saying,
“I plan to take the materials and approaches I experimented with here back to France and further develop them into new works through continued research.”
He also shared his desire to return to Kyoto in the future and continue building on these experiences.
クロストーク&Q&A:京都が繋ぎ合わせる多様な糸 Cross Talk & Q&A: Weaving Diverse Threads Together in Kyoto
プレゼンテーション後は全体ディスカッションへ。4組のオーナーと滞在クリエイターに加え、サポートクルーたちの裏話や運営上の工夫も共有されました。普段のコミュニケーションにはDiscordやGoogleカレンダーなどを活用し、臨機応変にクリエイターたちをサポート。「行きたい場所を提案したり、一緒に買い物に行ったり、案内したりと、計画できない動きにも柔軟に対応できたのが強みだった」との声があがります。
また、本イベントに参加した高校生・大学生も交えた意見として、「観光客が味わえない日常の京都体験が、レジデンスを通して可能になるのは大きな意義」「異文化との交わりで得られる“もう一つの視点”こそ、まちに新たな息吹を与えるのでは」という感想も。オーナー同士での情報交換やコラボレーションの話題もふくらみ、会場には今後の広がりを予感させる熱量が漂っていました。
After the presentations, the event transitioned into a group discussion.
In addition to the four teams of residency hosts and creators, the Support Crew members also shared behind-the-scenes stories and practical tips from their experience managing the program.
They explained how they used tools like Discord and Google Calendar to stay organized and provide flexible, on-the-spot support for the creators.
“There were plenty of spontaneous moments,” one member noted.
“Suggesting places to visit, going shopping together, giving guided tours—we were able to respond flexibly, which became one of our biggest strengths.”
High school and university students who attended the event also joined the conversation, offering reflections such as:
“The residency program provides an experience of everyday life in Kyoto that regular tourists can’t access, and that’s incredibly meaningful.”
And, “It’s the alternative perspectives gained through intercultural exchange that bring new life and energy to the city.”
There was also an active exchange of ideas among the residency hosts, with discussions on potential collaborations and future initiatives. The excitement in the room suggested that even more possibilities lie ahead.
化学反応を起こしていく京都へ Toward a Kyoto That Sparks Creative Reactions
今回のミートアップは、実際にレジデンスを行ったオーナーと海外クリエイターが一堂に会し、具体的な体験談や課題を共有する有意義な機会となりました。京都市としても、今後レジデンス運営に必要なノウハウをまとめ、2026年度にはより本格的な仕組み、サポート体制を整備していく予定とのこと。宿泊施設の少なさやコミュニケーションサポートの重要性など、課題は多いものの、そこに価値を感じるプレイヤーは確実に増えています。
This meetup brought together residency hosts and international creators who had participated in the program, offering a meaningful opportunity to share firsthand experiences and challenges.
Kyoto City also announced plans to compile the knowledge and know-how necessary for running residencies, with the goal of establishing a more comprehensive system and support framework by fiscal year 2026.
While challenges remain—such as the limited number of accommodation facilities and the importance of providing communication support—it’s clear that more and more people are recognizing the value of this initiative and stepping up to be part of it.
長い歴史をもつ京都。その街に海外から新しい素材(クリエイター)が加わることで、発酵し、化学反応を起こし、さらに深い味わいが生まれていく——。世界文化自由都市・京都を舞台にした「*** In Residence Kyoto」は、これからも多彩な才能と交流しながら、伝統を活かしつつ革新的な変化を起こし続けてくれることでしょう。京都を“ぬか床”のように熟成させていく、多国籍でクリエイティブな出会い。未来へと受け継がれるこの循環の輪に、あなたも加わってみませんか?
Kyoto is a city with a long and storied history. When new “ingredients”—creators from around the world—are added to this city, they ferment, spark chemical reactions, and give rise to even deeper, richer flavors.
“*** In Residence Kyoto”*, set in Kyoto, the World Cultural Freedom City, will continue to embrace diverse talents from across the globe, creating innovative change while honoring tradition.
Like a nukadoko fermentation bed, Kyoto matures through these multinational, creative encounters.
