An Outside Perspective of Kyoto’s Urban Environment 京都の都市環境に対する外部からの視点
Paritosh Goel is an urbanist, strategist, architect, and entrepreneur based in New Delhi. During his one-month residency in Kyoto, he stayed at a share house and office for entrepreneurs in the northeastern side of the city. This share house, called EVER, is managed by Koki Tsuji, a Kyoto-based entrepreneur who manages various EVER properties and startup projects in the city.
Before coming to Kyoto, Goel said he was looking forward to exploring the city and getting to know the locals and the local culture. “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to create something during my residency that would benefit both the city and the residency participants.” For his part, Tsuji was also anticipating the fresh perspective that Paritosh would bring to the EVER community. “Expanding knowledge and business viewpoints beyond domestic markets is a vital element of successful entrepreneurship, particularly in a world that’s growing more interconnected by the day.” Tsuji also knew that the outside perspective Goel would bring was something that would be particularly beneficial to the other residents at the EVER share house.
Paritoshi Goelさん（以下、パリトシュさん）は、ニューデリーを拠点に活動する都市計画家、建築家、そして起業家です。京都での1か月のレジデンス期間中、彼は市内北東部にある起業家向けのシェアハウス兼オフィス『EVER』に滞在しました。このシェアハウスは、京都を拠点に様々な物件やスタートアッププロジェクトを手がける起業家、都地耕喜さん（以下、都地さん）によって運営されています。
京都に来る前、パリトシュさんはこの街を探索し、地元の方々や文化に触れることを楽しみにしていたと語ります。
「レジデンス中に、街とレジデンス事業に関わる方々にとってウィンウィンとなる何かを創り出したいと考えていました。」
一方、都地さんも、パリトシュさんがEVERのコミュニティにもたらす新しい視点に期待していました。
「国内市場を超えた知識やビジネスの見方を広げることは、日々変化し続ける現代において、起業家精神を育むための不可欠な要素です。」
都地さんは、パリトシュさんの外部からの視点が、EVERシェアハウスに滞在する他の住人たちにも大きな影響を与えてくれると確信していました。
Staying Flexible and Creating a New Normal 柔軟性を保ち、新たな常識（ニューノーマル）を創る
In order to prepare for his residency, Goel read about Kyoto, its transportation and culture, and conducted research in anticipation of his cognitive mapmaking workshop. “I did some advanced planning to ensure I could work efficiently once I arrived, but I didn’t map out my day-to-day schedule. Normally, I plan things thoroughly when I travel, but since I was going to be here for a month, I knew that keeping my schedule flexible would be the best approach.” When he arrived, he was impressed by the EVER space. “It’s a good architectural case study. I think the way the building is designed can offer solutions to deal with growing urbanization throughout the world.” Goel said that he also felt very comfortable because the efficient space design and amenities provide residents with everything they need to be productive from the moment they arrive. He received an introduction to Tsuji’s other spaces as well, and other projects in the city. Tsuji said his initial approach to his relationship with Goel was to “show him around town and introduce him to my other projects. My goal was to provide a lot of stimuli and give him the opportunity to try new things and create a new normal for himself.” Goel enjoyed seeing both the shared office spaces and the shared kitchens, saying, “I think these are both essential projects for today’s world.”
パリトシュさんはレジデンスに備え、京都の歴史や交通手段、文化について事前に調べ、彼がこれまで世界各地で取り組んできた地図づくりのワークショップに向けたリサーチを行っていました。
「到着後に効率よく作業できるよう、事前にある程度の計画は立てましたが、日々のスケジュールは固定しませんでした。普段は旅行の際に綿密に予定を組むのですが、1か月という長い滞在になると、柔軟なスケジュールが最適だと思ったんです。」
到着すると、パリトシュさんはEVERのスペースに感銘を受けたと言います。
「この場所は、建築のケーススタディとして優れていると思います。世界中で進む都市化において、建物デザインの視点から見て一つの好事例だと感じました。」
さらに、効率的なスペースデザインと充実した設備により、到着した瞬間から必要なものが整っているため、とても快適に感じられたと語っています。また、都地さんは自ら運営・計画している他のスペースや市内で始める新しいプロジェクトも紹介し、パリトシュさんと多くの意見を交わしました。
「街を案内しながら、私自身の取り組むプロジェクトも紹介することで、お互いの刺激になり、彼自身と京都で新たな常識（ニューノーマル）を創り出すきっかけになればと考えていました」
と都地さんは話します。
「都地さんのどのプロジェクトも、現代において必要とされている不可欠なプロジェクトだと感じました」
パリトシュさんも、都地さんが新しく取り組むシェアオフィス、シェアキッチン、バイオ研究スペースなどを見学できたことに満足していたと語ります。
Living like a Local Thanks to Share House Member Support シェアハウスメンバーのサポートで地元の暮らしを実感
Living at EVER was beneficial for Goel since this residency was his first time in Japan. He said the other members cooked for him and showed him around the city. “Everything felt new when I first arrived, I was truly grateful for the others in the share house. Their support made my stay incredibly comfortable—and some even came to my lectures and workshops, which meant a lot to me." Perhaps one of the most impactful experiences Goel had was his introduction to Kyoto’s public bath houses. “I was very surprised by this culture because nothing like this exists in India.” Paritosh found a quiet joy in this cultural practice, returning to it often throughout his time in Kyoto.
初めての日本でのレジデンスであったEVERでの生活は、パリトシュさんにとってとても有益でした。EVERを利用する他のメンバーが料理を作ってくれたり、街を案内してくれたりしたそうです。
「到着したときは全てが新鮮で、シェアハウスの皆さんには本当に感謝しています。彼らのおかげで滞在がとても快適になりましたし、なかには私の講義やワークショップに参加してくれた人もいました。」
彼にとって最も印象深い体験のひとつは、京都の銭湯文化に触れたことでした。
「インドには、（公衆浴場や銭湯など）このような文化は全くなく、とても驚きました。」
パリトシュは京都滞在中、銭湯に足繁く通い、日本・京都ならではの体験として楽しんでいました。
Learning from One Another 互いに学び合うこと
As they reflected on the residence, Tsuji asked what Goel had learned from his time in Japan that he would like to take back with him to India. Goel said, “I think there are so many things that we can learn from Japan. There’s a spirit of cooperation here among the local community, in addition to politeness and cleanliness.” For Tsuji, this outside perspective was an invaluable part of understanding the specific qualities and possibilities that exist in Kyoto. “When I talk with the other EVER share house members, they all mention that Paritosh’s ideas and talks changed the way that they were thinking about the city and their own entrepreneurial projects.”
パリトシュさんが京都での体験を振り返る中、パリトシュさんが日本で学んだことのうちインドに持ち帰りたいと思うものは何かと、都地さんは尋ねました。パリトシュさんはこう答えています。
「日本からは本当に多くのことを学べると思います。ここには、丁寧さや清潔さに加えて、地域コミュニティ同士で協力し合う精神が根付いています。」
都地さんにとって、こうした外部からの視点は、京都にある独自の魅力や可能性を理解するために非常に貴重なものだと感じました。
「パリトシュさんのアイデアや講演を通じて、EVERシェアハウスの他のメンバーはみんな口を揃えて、京都という街に対する考え方、自分自身の起業プロジェクトに対する考え方が変わった、と言っています。」
Reaffirming Kyoto’s Identity through Collaborative Map-Making 地図を一緒につくり、京都のアイデンティティを再確認する
While permanence tends to define urban spaces, Goel focuses on the impermanent things that impact our daily lives, seeking to develop an understanding of how small things make up cities and our lives in those cities. As part of this larger project, Goel hosted Kyoto Ephemera, a “collaborative map-making event where the goal was to understand the perceptions of the participants.” Participants were asked to reflect on what aspects of Kyoto were most important to them and interrogate the ways that they defined and characterized the city for themselves. Using craft materials, receipts, and other objects, participants slowly built up a collaborative map of the city in discussion with the other attendees. “I loved hearing everyone’s experiences and stories—their sense of belonging, what makes them feel at home here, and the little things that make the city truly unique.” Goel’s description of the process as “group therapy” pointed to the emotional resonance that dialogue and a mutual consideration of our daily lives can bring to people.
Speaking about his own experience at the mapping Kyoto workshop, Tsuji said, “Seeing everyone gather together with different perspectives on Kyoto was wonderful. It seems like such a simple idea to ask other people how they see the city, but it prompted me to consider for myself why I’m running a business in Kyoto. In a way, it helped me reaffirm my own identity and sense of purpose. It was also a nice reminder of how many wonderful people there are living in this city.”
都市空間は永続性によって特徴付けられることが多いですが、パリトシュさんは日常生活に影響を与える「一時的で儚いもの」に着目し、小さな要素がどのように都市やその中での生活を形作っているのかを理解しようとしています。こういったアプローチのプロジェクトの一環として、彼は『Kyoto Ephemera（京都エフェメラ）』という、参加者の視点を探ることを目的とした「マップ・メイキングのワークショップ」を主催しました。参加者たちは、自分にとって京都のどの側面が最も重要であるかを振り返り、自身でどのようにこの街を定義し特徴づけているのかを問い直す機会となりました。クラフト素材やレシート、その他いろいろなオブジェクトを用いながら、参加者は互いに意見を交わしつつ、少しずつ一緒になって京都の地図を作り上げていきました。
「皆さんの体験や物語、ここでの居心地の良さ、そして街のユニークさを聞くのがとても楽しかったです。」
とパリトシュさんは語ります。彼はこのプロセスを「グループセラピー」と表現しており、対話や日々の生活へのエモーショナルな感覚を感じ取ることができたといいます。
また、マップ・メイキングのワークショップでの体験について、都地さんはこう話します。
「異なる視点を持つ人たちが集まって、京都について語り合うのは素晴らしかったです。街をどのように見ているかを他の人に尋ねるというシンプルなアイデアでしたが、改めて自分がなぜ京都でビジネスをしているのかを考えるきっかけにもなりました。ある意味で、自分自身のアイデンティティや目的意識を再確認する助けにもなりましたし、この街に住む素晴らしい人々の存在を実感する良い時間になりました。」
Different Perspectives Offer New Entrepreneurial Insights 異なる視点がもたらす、新たな起業のインサイト
In a broader sense, Tsuji noted how grateful he was to have the opportunity to witness firsthand Goel’s passion and determination, characteristics that he said are different from those he sees in Japan. “Every time I saw Paritosh I came away with new ideas for how to support entrepreneurs and build connections.” Despite Goel’s visit coinciding with a particularly busy time of the year, Tsuji still made time for numerous one-on-one discussions and came away from the experience invigorated and ready to tackle his next projects. Goel said, “I appreciated how Koki made himself available to me. He was very easy to communicate with. I really admire the perspective he brought to my residency and appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the multi-dimensional aspect of his own business endeavors.”
都地さんは、パリトシュさんの情熱や強い意志を知ることができたことがとても貴重な体験であったと語ります。パリトシュさんのようなキャラクターは、日本ではなかなか出会うことのできない特別な存在だと、都地さんは話してくれました。
「パリトシュさんと話をするたびに、起業家支援につながるための新しいアイデアが生まれるんです。」
レジデンスの時期と都地さん自身の忙しい時期とが重なってしまったにもかかわらず、都地さんは可能な限りパリトシュさんとの対話の時間を確保し、その対話からエネルギーを得て次のプロジェクトに挑んでいました。
「都地さんが自分に時間を割いてくれたことに感謝しています。彼とはとても気軽にコミュニケーションが取れ、彼の視点から私のレジデンスが豊かになったと感じています。また、彼自身のビジネスにおける多面的な取り組みについて学べたことも大変ありがたかったです。」
とパリトシュさんも話しています。
Youth Engagement and Entrepreneurial Possibilities 若者の参加と起業の可能性
Tsuji had high praise for the student support staff members. “They were very engaged and very responsible. I think their presence is going to be really valuable going forward because they’ll be able to serve as a link between the people providing the residency and those participating in the residency.” Goel echoed Tsuji’s comments. “I’m actually very impressed by the youth in Japan. There were multiple times when I interacted with them in large numbers. Almost everyone asked questions during my entrepreneurship lecture, and everyone was so thoughtful and creative at the map-making workshop as well.”
As they reflected on what moments stood out to them over the past month, Tsuji talked about Goel’s entrepreneur talk, a presentation that the city of Kyoto requested Goel give to college students regarding business and Goel’s own experience as an entrepreneur. “I thought Paritosh’s event was great. It made me start thinking more clearly about how I want to approach international business myself. Moving forward, I’d like to focus on supporting and revitalizing the biotech industry in Japan. Since India is also a crucial player in the biotech sector, it would be fantastic if we could work together to elevate both industries.” Goel concurs, saying, “We’ve been having lots of discussions about his plans to expand his business to the US since that talk.”
都地さんは、学生サポートスタッフのメンバーについて非常に高く評価しています。
「彼らはとても積極的で責任感があり、レジデンスを提供する側と参加する側の架け橋として、今後ますます価値を発揮すると思います。」
パリトシュさんも都地さんの意見と同じく、
「実は、日本の若者たちにも非常に感銘を受けました。起業に関する講義では、ほぼ全員が積極的に質問し、マップ・メイキングのワークショップでは皆が深い考察力と創造的な発想を見せてくれたんです。」
と語ります。
また、この1か月間で印象に残った瞬間として、都地さんは京都市から依頼されたパリトシュさんの起業家トークイベントを挙げました。これは、大学生に対してビジネスやパリトシュさん自身の起業経験を共有するプレゼンテーションでした。
「パリトシュさんの起業についてのプレゼンテーションは素晴らしかったです。彼の話を聞くことで、私自身も国際的なビジネスにどう取り組むべきかを改めて考えるきっかけになりました。今後、日本のバイオテクノロジー産業の支援と活性化に注力したいと考えており、インドもこの分野で重要な役割を果たしているので、両国が協力して業界を高められたら素晴らしいですね。」
と都地さん。
「その講演をきっかけに、都地さんのアメリカへの進出に向けた計画についてもたくさん話し合っているんです。」
とパリトシュさんは付け加えました。
Kyoto: A City of Community and Mutual Support 京都：コミュニティと助け合いの街
When asked what Kyoto means to him, Goel focused on its impermanent features, such as the spiritual atmosphere and the pace of the city. “From a distance, Kyoto looks really big. But being here in the city, it feels like a village. People here help each other out and it’s easier to network. There’s an effortlessness here that’s manifested throughout the city. I see a common humanity, and a willingness among the people to open up and share.” Goel said that these qualities made his own residency work in the city feel effortless. “There’s mutual support among the residents and cultural practitioners, and all the stakeholders in the residency project really made me feel at ease.”
京都が自分にとってどんな意味を持つかと問われたとき、パリトシュさんは、心地の良い雰囲気や街のリズムなど、京都の繊細な特徴を挙げました。
「遠くから見ると京都はとても大きく見えますが、実際にこの街にいると、むしろ村のような温かみを感じます。人々は互いに助け合い、ネットワークを築きやすいんです。自然体でいられるような雰囲気が街のなかにあり、人々が心を開き、いろいろなものを共有しようとしている姿勢が見受けられます。」
こうした特徴が、パリトシュさん自身のレジデンスでの活動をとても自然なものにしていると語ります。
「レジデンス参加者や文化を発信する方々、そしてプロジェクトに関わるすべての関係者同士が互いに支え合っており、そのおかげで安心して過ごすことができました。」
“At the end of the day, beyond every role and responsibility, you are a human being—deserving of grace, rest, and love” 「結局のところ、私たちはみんな人間だから。」
Tsuji said Goel integrated well with the community, noting that his residency enabled Tsuji to gain a fresh understanding of what makes Kyoto culture so unique. “Who people are here doesn’t matter. It matters what sorts of personal relationships you’re able to foster and care for. From afar, Kyoto may seem like it’s cold or distant. But in fact, when you get up close to it, the opposite is true. We really value the connections we have with each other, and we’re very protective of them.” Goel enthusiastically agreed. “At the end of the day, we’re all human beings. Those human connections and sensitivities matter much more than job titles.” For both Goel and Tsuji, this model residence project provided an opportunity to consider new entrepreneurial endeavors, and also to gain a deeper understanding of the qualities that make the Kyoto community so special.
都地さんは、パリトシュさんが地域にしっかりと溶け込んだことを素晴らしいと感じ、彼のレジデンス滞在を通じて京都文化の独自性を新たに理解する機会となったと語ります。
「京都では、人とどんな関係を育み、大切にしていくかが肝心です。他の街から見ると、京都の人は閉鎖的なイメージをもっているかもしれませんが、実際に京都に来ると全く逆で、互いの繋がりを非常に大切にし、それを守ろうとする気持ちが強いんです。」
パリトシュさんも熱く話してくれます。
「結局のところ、私たちはみんな人間だから。肩書きなどよりも、人と人との繋がりや感性が何より大切だと思います。」
このモデルレジデンスプロジェクトは、パリトシュさんと都地さん双方にとって、新たな起業の試みを模索する貴重な機会となっただけでなく、京都コミュニティが持つ特別な魅力や価値をより深く理解するための場になりました。
